What Is an NDT Technician?
NDT (nondestructive testing) can be defined as a variety of inspection techniques for inspectors to collect information about a material. This can include a component, material, or system without altering it permanently. Other terms are NDI (nondestructive inspection) and NDE (nondestructive examination or evaluation).
1. Visual Testing (VT)
This is where you will collect visual data on a material. This is the most basic method of examining a material.
There are 2 methods to perform this, direct visual testing, and indirect visual testing. In direct visual testing your tool will be your eyes and your ability to discern slight imperfections in a material. In indirect visual testing you might use a drone or robot, a camera or borescope.
2. Radiographic Testing (RT)
Did you know that in 1895 Wilhelm Roentgen found a way to look inside the body without surgery? He found that electricity through low-pressure gases with a partially evacuated glass tube and an induction coil allowed him to do this. Later this technology moved from healthcare to industrial radiography for inspection of ships and bridges.
In radiographic testing (RT testing), you will use either traditional film radiography, or digital radiography. They are all considered safe and reliable.
Film radiography uses traditional film to capture the “Radiograph”. While Digital radiography uses electronic data storage, and chemicals to process film are not required.
3. Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT)
Liquid penetrant inspection (PT) is an inexpensive inspection process that can reveal defects of discontinuities that are open to the surface of an object and is most commonly used for inspection of nonferromagnetic materials.
4. Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
Ultrasonic inspection uses sound waves to examine an object. These waves are sent through an object via an ultrasonic transducer and then reflected and returned to the equipment for interpretation.
Ultrasonic examination is widely used in nondestructive testing in the oil and gas industry, rail industry, and many other industries.
5. Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)
Magnetic particle testing used magnetic fields to examine objects for surface and slightly subsurface discontinuities. MT is a fast and reliable inspection method and is used only on ferromagnetic materials.
